Abstract
Asthma Bronchiale is the top ten cause of illness and death in Indonesia (Ministry of Health of the Republic of
Indonesia, 2008). Asthma disease that often recurs and is uncontrolled in addition to causing a decrease in
productivity and quality of life of the community can also increase health costs, the risk of hospitalization and
cause death(Eric, et.al., 2010). The results of previous studies indicate that diaphragmatic breathing exercise is
effective in improving pulmonary ventilation function, which is indicated by an increase in peak expiratory flow.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of diaphragmatic breathing exercise on the improvement of
lung ventilation function in asthma patients in the working area of Kotabumi II Public Health Center, North
Lampung Regency. The research design was a quasi experiment with one group pretest post tets. The population
in this study were asthma patients, which involved 30 respondents with a purposive sampling technique. This
research was conducted from September to October 2017. The results showed that there was a significant effect
of diaphragmatic breathing exercise on the improvement of pulmonary ventilation function in asthma patients in
the Kotabumi II Public Health Center (p value = 0,034 on α = 0,05).Based on the results of this study, the
suggestion for respondents is to do regular diaphragmatic breathting exercises to prevent asthma recurrence.
